A DEATH CULT:
The Texas Republican went on to say, “There are more important things than living, and that’s saving this country for my children and my grandchildren — and saving this country for all of us. And I don’t want to die. Nobody wants to die. But maybe we’ve got to take some risks and get back in the game — and get this country back up and running.”
Yeah, I ain't risking my health or my family's health to "save the country" for the chilrens.
And ^ here's why this is the morally superior position to Patrick's utilitarianism nonsense. Because each of us acting in this kind of selfish rational-self interest also has a utilitarian side effect that guarantees more safety for "all of us." And it's voluntary for everyone.
"Going back to work" to try and save the country for the chilrens risks putting others in danger who haven't voluntary agreed to that risk. Healthcare workers, for instance, would rather you stay home, because more infected patients shuffling into their ERs increases their risk of infection. When you go out shopping for essentials, you'd like to think that everyone there and the workers themselves have only been basically doing that (and other socially distanced essential activity) rather than filling bars, churches, beaches and nightclubs the night before.
A. Death. Cult.

Trump’s Hoax: Obama Didn’t Predict This Coronavirus And Design A Test For It
Trump has all kinds of excuses for his failures,
including attacking his predecessor for not making a test for a disease that wouldn’t come to pass for three years
presidents have long blamed predecessors to explain away their own troubles.
“But Trump’s taking it to where anything he does wrong is Barack Obama’s fault is beyond childish,”
“It’s just kind of Trump’s insanity unspooling right in front of us.”
Trump has lied repeatedly (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-pandemic-response_n_5e6d412ec5b6747ef11e4072) about the pandemic and his handling of it (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-malaria-drugs_n_5e8ce16bc5b6e1d10a6b2cc9),
and has already stated that he does not “take responsibility at all” for the federal response and the more than 43,000 Americans the disease has killed so far.
But
his blaming of Obama for not devising a suitable test
defies both common sense and the laws of temporal physics.

Shitbag Repugs shitting it up shithole TX
Analysis: Texas has scant data about the pandemic, leaving a lot of questions
State officials have a lot more data about the new coronavirus than they did just days ago.
But Texas remains behind the curve when it comes to critical information about the spread of the disease.
Where to start?
Not enough tests have been completed, or taken, to really know who has or doesn’t have the disease, where the Texas hotspots are, or whether people who have died of respiratory problems had COVID-19.
The relatively small number of test results also means
we don’t know which people had the disease and recovered (and how many people have recovered) and
whether the projections being made with that skimpy data are accurate enough to guide our public health decisions.
It’s not enough to say that the testing is getting better, that we know more than we knew just a few days ago.
What we still don’t know overshadows what we do know.
We’re like pilots flying in clouds without instruments.
We know a little bit, but not enough to make really solid decisions or to figure out what’s next. We’re learning as we go. As of Thursday,
Texas was reporting (https://www.texastribune.org/2020/04/09/coronavirus-texas-49-dallas-rents-rvs-quarantine-first-responders/)
10,230 cases and 199 deaths,
1,439 hospitalized COVID-19 patients and
106,134 tests conducted.
Given the level of testing right now, it’s hard to know how many cases Texas really has.

Trump is doing the ‘I barely know the guy routine’ with hydroxychloroquine now it’s getting bad results
he is running away from the drug now that it no longer looks like the miracle cure he spent weeks telling his supporters it was.
a new study of patients at a VA medical center finds the drug not only has no benefit, it even has a higher death rate. And so the president says this tonight.”
“I don’t know of the report,” :lol said Trump at the day’s press briefing, when asked about the study.
“Says he doesn’t know anything about that report showing that patients who took the drug had higher death rates than those who didn’t,” said Lemon.
“The drug he promoted over and over and over.
Now the president just says that he’s going to take a look.
That’s not good enough.
He’s got a responsibility to take this seriously.
He promoted a totally unproven drug again and again,
telling Americans desperate to do something, anything to save their lives, what have you got to lose, he said.
Now he’s doing the ‘I barely know the guy’ routine with the drug
that he said would be the game-changer and a gift from heaven.”

William Barr: Feds Could Challenge States If Stay-At-Home Orders Go ‘Too Far’
The attorney general said the Justice Department could hypothetically side with plaintiffs who file civil liberties lawsuits against states over quarantine orders.
The Justice Department could join legal action against states
if it deems that their coronavirus (https://www.huffpost.com/news/topic/coronavirus)-related orders, including social distancing and stay-at-home rules, go “too far,” Attorney General William Barr (https://www.huffpost.com/news/topic/william-barr) said
the Justice Department would have to intervene if governors “impinge” on civil rights or the economy. :lol
“These are unprecedented burdens on civil liberties right now. ...
The idea that you have to stay in your house is disturbingly close to house arrest,” :lol
“The first line of defense for people is the political process in their states,” :lol

Still think COVID is no worse than the flu?
Michael Gross
"Here is some factual information from a doctor - I have read many explanations in the last 2 weeks, but THIS one slammed me in the face!
For anyone who knows that one person who just can’t seem to get on board with this- feel free to share.
Let me introduce myself:
I am a practicing ER doctor with a Bachelors degree in cell and molecular biology/genetics and a Masters degree in public health in addition to my doctorate.
COVID is not a flu. Not even a little. Here are reasons why:
1. It is a separate species. It is no more like influenza than you are like a hippo. DIFFERENT SPECIES.
2. It is an airborne virus. This means the tiny droplets can stay in the air for a full 2 hours. So if a person coughed in aisle 4 of Target 1.5 hours ago, they may be home now but their covid cloud is still hanging there just waiting for you to walk by and take a breath. Influenza is not an airborne virus. It is droplet spread- meaning someone has to directly crop dust you with their sneeze to get you sick. Covid is much more contagious.
3. Covid is more virulent. Virulence factor is a measure of how catchy something is. For example, the flu is like beer. It takes a bunch to get you drunk. Covid is more like tequila - A little goes a long way. You need to suck up a lot of flu particles to actually catch the flu; with covid, even a few particles is enough to infect you.
4. Covid has a longer incubation than the flu. When you catch the flu, you typically get sick in the next 1-2 days. This is awesome because it means you stay at home while contagious because you feel like a heap of fried garbage. Covid has a blissful 5-9 days of symptom free time during which you are well enough to head to the movies, gym or mar-a-lago while also being contagious enough to infect everyone you encounter.
5. Covid has a longer duration of illness than flu. With covid, you have a 5-9 days of blissful asymptomatic contagiousness. This then turns into about 1 week of cough and overall feeling like hell but still surviving.
Week 2 is when things hit the fan and people end up unable to breathe and on a ventilator. Many stay on the vent for up to 15 days.
5 days incubating+7 kinda sick days + 15 days on a ventilator makes for 27 days of virus spreading illness,
(assuming your don’t just die of massive asphyxiation and body-wide collapse from overwhelming infection somewhere in that last week).
The flu has an average incubation of 1-2 days and sick time of 7 days for a total of 9 infectious days. In the world of deadly viruses, that 18 extra days might as well be a millennia.
6. Covid is more deadly. A LOT more deadly. The flu has about a 0.2% mortality rate, meaning 2 of every thousand people who get sick with flu will die. On the contrary, the death rate from covid is reportedly 2%, so 10 times more deadly than flu. Ten times more death seems like a lot more death to me. Whats more worrisome is that 2% is actually incorrect because it doesn’t kill kids so that skews the average. With covid, age is a major factor in survival. If we don’t include people under 30, the death rate for adults is on average 4.5%. 9 out of every 200 adults that get this will die from it. Do you know 200 adults? Do you think losing 9 of them is no big deal? Since mortality increases with age in covid, the risk gets worse as you get older so if we put 100 grannies in a room with covid, only 85 would make it out alive to make pies and tell great stories of the old days... and that just sucks.
I hope that helps to clarify why covid is in no way a flu, why you are in no way a hippo, and
why staying home is the only way for non-essential people to do their part
while I spend my days at work covered in a plastic poncho,
sucking air through a stuffy respirator mask,
leaving my scrubs in my driveway,
showering the covid off at 4am when I get in, and
thinking to myself “now do u still think it was just a flu?” as I risk my own life with my face 2 inches from their highly contagious, gasping mouth while I slide the plastic tube down their throat and start up the ventilator."

Austin just seems to be on a plateau these past two weeks. I have always been under the impression that the daily new case count should be on a downward trend for a time before relaxing any restrictions. Hence my confusion about statewide relaxation. They opened up a state park right in the middle of one of Travis county's hot spots so it seems dicey to me.
They are limiting the amount of people let in the park and recommending distancing, but my best friend was there Monday and he said people were hugging and shaking hands everywhere like a bunch of mooks. He didn't get within 20 yards of anyone.

Alarmed as COVID patients' blood thickened, New York doctors try new treatments
Signs of blood thickening and clotting were being detected in different organs by doctors from different specialties.
This would turn out to be one of the alarming ways the virus ravages the body
At Mount Sinai, nephrologists noticed kidney dialysis catheters getting plugged with clots.
Pulmonologists monitoring COVID-19 patients on mechanical ventilators could see portions of lungs were oddly bloodless.
Neurosurgeons confronted a surge in their usual caseload of strokes due to blood clots, the age of victims skewing younger, with at least half testing positive for the virus.

Nothing but the the typical winter flu season, just the flue, even a hoax
ER staff saves lives, suffers in hot spot
“It’s been a nightmare.
We have a volume of sick people like you can’t believe. In one shift,
I pronounced six people dead,”
The Yonkers hospital, which sits near the Bronx border and serves one of the poorest sections of Westchester County’s largest city, has been besieged by the new coronavirus.
Half of the approximately 280 staff members who were tested for the disease were positive —
with another 25 to 30 still awaiting results
“We’ve had many family members and groups, and we’ve even had people from the same family who have died within days of each other,”
“People are afraid,” Hopkins said. “They’re scared. Their relatives, their friends are dying.”
“There’s a lot of people gouging out there. A mask that cost 50 cents before are costing $7, $8 each. Gowns that would cost 50 cents as well, are $7 each. Protective shields that were $1.25, people looking for 25 bucks a pop,”
“It is tiring. It is stressful,”
“You’re watching people be sick.
You’re watching people succumb to the disease.
It weighs on you mentally, physically.”

I'm not talking government money, I'm talking corporate. Pharma R&D budgeting is tightly controlled, targeting a wide variety of high-profit medicines in the pre-clinical phase. When you put all your scientists on solving the same problem, you get a multiplier effect. Director of key federal vaccine agency says his departure was retaliation
Updated 5:18 PM EDT April 22, 2020
CNN
The director of the office involved in developing a coronavirus vaccine says he was abruptly dismissed from his post in part because he resisted efforts to widen the availability of a coronavirus treatment pushed by President Donald Trump.
Dr. Rick Bright had led BARDA, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, since 2016 until Tuesday, when was reassigned to a narrower position. He also announced he will file a whistleblower complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general.
"I believe this transfer was in response to my insistence that the government invest the billions of dollars allocated by Congress to address the Covid-19 pandemic into safe and scientifically vetted solutions, and not in drugs, vaccines and other technologies that lack scientific merit," Bright said in a lengthy statement issued Wednesday. "I am speaking out because to combat this deadly virus, science -- not politics or cronyism -- has to lead the way."
He cited "clashes with political leadership" as a reason for his sidelining, as well as his resistance to "efforts to fund potentially dangerous drugs promoted by those with political connections."
Bright clashed directly with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Bob Kadlec, the assistant secretary for preparedness and response, two people familiar with the situation told CNN.
One source said the "political leadership" Bright referred to in his statement is Azar.
Bright previously did not respond to repeated requests for comment on his departure by CNN. The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on Bright's statement.
Bright said he "limited the broad use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, promoted by the administration as a panacea, but which clearly lack scientific merit."
Trump repeatedly promoted that therapeutic treatment for coronavirus, touting its possible effects at White House briefings as recently as April 13.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Bright's move in a statement to CNN Tuesday and said he will now lead a new government project: a public-private partnership on vaccine development and treatment.
"On April 17, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a new public-private partnership -- the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) partnership -- to accelerate the development of COVID-19 vaccine and treatment options. At the same time, given the simultaneous importance of accelerating the development of diagnostic tests for COVID-19, Dr. Rick Bright will transfer the skills he has applied as Director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to the National Institutes of Health, as part of a bold plan to accelerate the development and deployment of novel point-of-care testing platforms," the HHS statement said.
Bright had been with the agency as its influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases Division director since 2010 before he was tapped to lead it in late 2016.
BARDA is a small, but powerful agency with remarkable purchasing power. Though little-known, it is especially critical during a pandemic, which is why Bright's abrupt departure surprised his colleagues.
Bright was removed from his position but is not resigning, the source familiar said. He said Wednesday he will request that the HHS inspector general "investigate the manner in which this administration has politicized the work of BARDA and has pressured me and other conscientious scientists to fund companies with political connections as well as efforts that lack scientific merit."
He has not yet filed the request, according to the source, but intends to do so in the next day or so.
His lawyers said in the statement that that they will request a stay of the termination and that Bright "be permitted to remain in his position" pending the investigation's findings.
This unaualified, incompetent POS Trump is trying to kill as many Americans as is humanly possible.

Top vaccine doctor says his concern about Trump’s coronavirus treatment theory led to ouster from federal agency
PUBLISHED WED, APR 22 20205:01 PM EDTUPDATED 8 MIN AGO
A doctor who was removed as head of the federal agency that is helping develop a vaccine for the coronavirus said he was ousted because he called for resistance to widespread adoption of a drug promoted by President Donald Trump as a treatment for Covid-19.
Dr. Rick Bright also said that he believed he was removed from his post because he insisted that “the billions of dollars allocated by Congress to address the Covid-19 pandemic” be invested “into safe and scientifically vetted solutions, and not in drugs, vaccines and other technologies that lack scientific merit.”
“I am speaking out because to combat this deadly virus, science — not politics or cronyism — has to lead the way,” Bright said in a statement, which was first reported by The New York Times.
“Rushing blindly towards unproven drugs can be disastrous and result in countless more deaths. Science, in service to the health and safety of the American people, must always trump politics.”
The White House declined to comment. The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Bright was removed Tuesday as director the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a division of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department that is known by the acronym BARDA.
He was given a job with less responsibilities at the National Institutes of Health.
“Sidelining me in the middle of this pandemic and placing politics and cronyism ahead of science puts lives at risk and stunts national efforts to safely and effectively address this urgent public health crisis,” Bright wrote in his statement.
He said that he will ask HHS’s inspector general, an internal ethics watchdog, to “investigate the manner in which this administration has politicized the work of BARDA and has pressured me and other conscientious scientists to fund companies with political connections and efforts that lack scientific merit.”
Bright’s attorneys, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, said in a prepared statement that “the Administration’s removal of Dr. Bright from his position as director of BARDA is retaliation plain and simple.”
“The results from the Administration’s refusal to listen to the experts and to sideline those like Dr. Bright who point out any errors in the government’s response will continue to be catastrophic for the American people,” said Katz and Banks, whose law firm specializes in representing whistleblowers.
“We will request that the Office of Special Counsel seek a stay of Dr. Bright’s termination and that Dr. Bright be permitted to remain in his position pending the OSC and IG’s investigation of this unlawful forced transfer.”
Katz in 2018 represented Christine Blasey Ford, a Stanford University psychology professor who testified that she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when they were high school students. Kavanaugh was confirmed for a seat on the high court after Ford’s testimony.
In his statement Wednesday, Bright wrote, “My professional background has prepared me for a moment like this — to confront and defeat a deadly virus that threatens Americans and people around the globe.”
“To this point, I have led the government’s efforts to invest in the best science available to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.”
“Unfortunately, this resulted in clashes with H.H.S. political leadership, including criticism for my proactive efforts to invest early into vaccines and supplies critical to saving American lives. I also resisted efforts to fund potentially dangerous drugs promoted by those with political connections,” he wrote.
Bright also wrote, “Specifically, and contrary to misguided directives, I limited the broad use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, promoted by the administration as a panacea, but which clearly lack scientific merit,” he said.
Trump has suggested that those drugs could be effective in treating Covid-19 patients.
Hydroxychloroquine is normally used to treat malaria.
An analysis released Tuesday found that there was no benefit to using that drug to treat coronavirus, and, in fact, that there were more deaths among Covid-19 patients in America veterans hospitals who received hydroxychloroquine compared to those who were given standard care.
Bright wrote, “While I am prepared to look at all options and to think ‘outside the box’ for effective treatments, I rightly resisted efforts to provide an unproven drug on demand to the American public.”
″“I insisted that these drugs be provided only to hospitalized patients with confirmed Covid-19 while under the supervision of a physician.
He added that, “These drugs have potentially serious risks associated with them, including increased mortality observed in some recent studies in patients with Covid-19.”

He added that, “These drugs have potentially serious risks associated with them, including increased mortality observed in some recent studies in patients with Covid-19.”https://mobile.twitter.com/tomselliott/status/1252964789816643584

"Well, you’re asking that because of what happened — it’s a fair question, too — what happened in Denver. Because in Denver, I’ve never seen — I said, “What’s going on?” We’re looking at this graph where everything’s looking beautiful and it’s coming down and then you got this one spike. It’s — I said, “What happened to Denver?”
And many people, very quickly, and they — by the way, they were on it like, so fast, you wouldn’t believe it. They knew every aspect. They had people go and — not only testing, “Who did you see? Where were you? How many people did you meet? Were you out to dinner in somebody else’s home? Where were you?” Where did — where did this number of people come from? How did — they are totally on it.
Now, this just happened. I just saw it this morning. I’m looking at everything smooth, going down, topping out. And then you have this one spike in Denver. It’s like, where did this come from?
So we’ll be looking at that. And we don’t want cases like that happening. This was — but this — this is the kind of thing can happen. This is very complex.
This is a very brilliant enemy. You know, it’s a brilliant enemy. They develop drugs like the antibiotics. You see it. Antibiotics used to solve every problem. Now one of the biggest problems the world has is the germ has gotten so brilliant that the antibiotic can’t keep up with it. And they’re constantly trying to come up with a new — people go to a hospital and they catch — they go for a heart operation — that’s no problem, but they end up dying from — from problems. You know the problems I’m talking about. There’s a whole genius to it.
We’re fighting — not only is it hidden, but it’s very smart. Okay? It’s invisible and it’s hidden, but it’s — it’s very smart. And you see that in a case like a Denver.
But, you know, I think we’re doing well, and they’re on Denver like you wouldn’t believe. I came in this morning; it was a flurry. I said what’s going on? They said, “Denver.” I said, “What happened to Denver?” Because Denver was doing pretty well. And they’ve got that under control. But, yeah, that would be a case where you do some very big testing."

Harrison, 37, was an unusual choice, with no formal education in public health, management, or medicine and with only limited experience in the fields. In 2006, he joined HHS in a one-year stint as a “Confidential Assistant” to Azar, who was then deputy secretary. He also had posts working for Vice President Dick Cheney, the Department of Defense and a Washington public relations company.
Before joining the Trump Administration in January 2018, Harrison’s official HHS biography says, he “ran a small business in Texas.” The biography does not disclose the name or nature of that business, but his personal financial disclosure forms show that from 2012 until 2018 he ran a company called Dallas Labradoodles.https://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN2243CE

Just wait till it opens a bit and Americans who ain't gettin' that $600 a week kicker start going out and getting the jobs of the $600 a week kickers. They'll have to pass a law, and toot sweet.
I don’t post on any alts and it wasn’t shit talking. I read you couldn’t cook rice. If you are worried about getting it next Fall and you need to shelter in place again it would be a good idea to learn how to cook rice before then.
That’s a terrible tip.
There are more important crafts I’d rather be learning than cooking rice before the time of my eventual death. You could have at least try been more subtle with your backhanded “compliment” honestly.

You're smarter than this, TSA.
First of all, that graph proves the point that death from all causes has risen by 3K in one month (7K actually, since NY's official death toll is 20K). That's an over 50 percent increase, so yeah, something bad is going on. And that is WITH New York essentially being locked down. Secondly, he just lazily combines all causes. Of course events like homicide, accidents, and "etc" are going to be down due to social distancing. Heart disease is the biggest killer in New York, and we can theorize the decline here is due to Covid killing people who have heart disease before heart disease can. Hypertension is a common co-morbidity, and a feature of respiratory illnesses is that they basically constrict your pulmonary system, which makes it much harder for the body to circulate oxygenated blood. Heart has to pump harder to compensate, so it's obvious how high risk people with pre-existing heart conditions will be.
The from/with deflection is really weak.

Yeah in my 30s still.
My point is you don’t know with this virus and if NY gets hit with the same intensity who knows what’ll happen then.
And what many people aren't appreciating right now is that risk of death isn't the only concern. No shortage of testimonials from younger and healthy people who say this has hit them harder than any flu they've ever had. Week long fevers, migraines, and body aches. Supplemental oxygen use. Difficulty breathing. Makes sense because this is a virus the human body has never encountered before.
Yeah, I ain't risking feeling like that just so I can get a haircut. If saving small businesses and the economy is the concern, tell the government and the thousands of greedo billionaires and multimillionaires out there to start stepping up with more relief packages and charitable donations. That fuckwad Bezos has increased his wealth from 100 to 140 billion over the pandemic. He basically got a free 40 billion. He didn't "earn it" or "bootstrap it," he's thriving off the reduced competition of those small businesses and brick-and-mortar retailers being forced to close. Why hasn't he pledged that free 40 billion into a small business relief charity? Because he's a greedy fuckin' sociopath.
That's my essential problem with the "open up" protests. These people shouldn't be protesting for the "right" to return to work and risk health to pay their bills, they should be protesting the fuckin' system that has them feeling like they need to risk their health to pay the bills. There really is enough money out there to float those in need over the entire pandemic.

The leftists screaming "dog whistle" almost always pure bullshit. They just want to inject their narratives whenever possible.
No, Trump has said plenty of racially charged bullshit in clear, non-dog whistle terms. And see, here's where I can be consistent where your side can't. I can't stand when the left pivots to race, either. I understand the frustration a poor rural white living in opioid country might have when leftist politicians or figures make it seem like people of color are the only ones suffering injustices. All this achieves is driving those poor whites, who used to be on your side, in the arms of white nationalist thinking. The Left needs to get back on focusing on class disparities rather than racial disparities.

Where is he wrong? Economic hardship does in fact not equal death in this country. There's no shortage of charities and programs, even in the time of Covid, that will prevent people suffering economic hardship from descending into starvation. Suicides have been going up steadily for 20 years, so the argument of "well, but all this economic hardship is going to lead to an increase in suicides that will cause more death than Covid" is correlation at best.
Polls have shown the majority of Americans won't be comfortable resuming life as usual. So if you're a small business nightclub owner or bar owner, well, sorry to say even if those businesses are allowed to reopen, they'll probably fail in a month anyway.
Cuomo is expressing that bootstrap mentality conservatives love. When the times get tough, the tough get going. That said, I disagree with Cuomo. He should be slamming his fist on the dais and urging more relief, more charitable donations from your billionaire heroes, and more collective effort from ALL OF US to help those in need.
But yeah, "bootstraps bad now" because a Dem figure said it :lol.

New York’s tab for unemployment benefits has exploded as the pandemic put hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers out of work during a statewide lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. As of Monday, the Labor Department had paid $2.2 billion in unemployment benefits to 1.1 million people since the start of the crisis, officials said.
The Labor Department has slimmed its backlog of application phone calls to just 4,305 from 275,000 as it deployed more than 3,100 staffers to field unemployment benefits inquiries
