You're the one who said Omicron would turn it into something benign. Make the public health emergency go away.
That hasn't happened, quite the opposite. Now we have new outbreaks every 3-4 months, with little naturally conferred immunity against reinfection and no substantiated diminution of disease and death.
Omicron isn't mild. COVID never has been yet. That's just happy talk.

the incubatory period of the virus makes it impossible to really get ahead any way they might try. Sampling to create a model is prone to poor accuracy because of how the virus spreads and distributes within a population.

200,000 people in the US have died from it since December. It's an airborne disease with chronic effects on the brain, the vascular system, the kidneys, metabolism and immunity that has infected tens of millions of Americans. How is any of that mild?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be in isolation until at least June 2nd, his office announced Saturday. The Governor will be working remotely until he is out of quarantine.
In a statement, the California Governor's Press Office announced that the Governor is experiencing mild symptoms. He is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 including two booster shots as recent as May 18.
On Saturday evening, Newsom's Press Office announced that the Governor has received a prescription for Paxlovid, from Pfizer, and will begin his five-day treatment immediately.

Overlapping waves of Omicron
BA.4/5 > BA.2.12 > BA.2 > BA.1
Each more transmissible, with more immune escape. Omicron reinfections are putting the lie to "herd immunity by means of mass infection" charlatans. South Africa just had a fifth wave with 97% seropositivity.
“We now report findings from a systematic antigenic analysis of these surging Omicron subvariants,” says a recent paper published to the BioRxiv preprint server. “BA.2.12.1 is only modestly (1.8-fold) more resistant to sera from vaccinated and boosted individuals than BA.2. On the other hand, BA.4/5 is substantially (4.2-fold) more resistant and thus more likely to lead to vaccine breakthrough infections.”
If true, that means the new variants have a much larger population that they can potentially access via breakthrough infections, where previous variants like BA.2.12.1 produced far fewer breakthrough infections.
The result has been what epidemiologist and biostatistician Dr. Katelyn Jetelina — who blogs under the moniker Your Local Epidemiologist — calls the “battle of Omicron.”
“After our first massive BA.1 wave,” Dr. Jetelina wrote today in her email newsletter, “BA.2 tried to take hold only to be overtaken by BA.2.12.1. Now, BA.4 and BA.5 are gaining traction very quickly and seem to be easily outcompeting the rest. Given recent lab studies, though, this isn’t a surprise. BA.4/5 are particularly good at escaping antibodies and reinfecting people previously infected with Omicron, as well as boosted individuals.”https://ca.news.yahoo.com/battle-omicron-being-won-ba-035043781.html

Inaction on COVID isn't just democidal, if the cases meet the estimate, the number of people debilitated by long COVID will be in the eight figures.
That would be bad for Biden, so of course GOP dead enders will be for that.
The White House reportedly issued a warning to Congress on Friday, claiming that as many as 100 million Americans could get infected with COVID-19 this fall and winter, if it doesn't receive new funding for vaccines and coronavirus testing, according to The Hill.
The report, citing a Biden administration senior official, says the median range of coronavirus models from outside experts suggests "significantly more" Americans will catch the virus in the coming months, particularly if there's a new variant.https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/white-house-biden-coronavirus-vaccine/2022/05/06/id/1068812/

One of the critical symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection is lymphopenia. Lymphopenia is a condition in which patients exhibit reduced levels of white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are the fundamental defense cells of our adaptive immune system. They consist of natural killer cells, T cells, and B cells. When any of these cells are reduced, it can inhibit our body’s ability to protect itself from viruses. Recent reports have shown that marked lymphopenia is observed in 83.2% of SARS-CoV-2 patients (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmoa2002032), but little is known about how SARS-CoV-2 effectively dismantles one of our primary tools of defense

Superinfections, which typically affect those with highly suppressed immune systems (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/immune-systems) like people living with HIV/AIDS or organ transplant patients, are increasingly seen in patients who have recovered from Covid-19. Notably, many are contracting these rare co-infections despite not being 'bombed' with steroids or treated for diabetes, underlining the possibility of Covid-19 itself causing massive immune weakening.https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/infections-seen-among-hiv-patients-hit-covid-survivors/articleshow/83940125.cms

The data is opaque, meaning individuals don't have the information they need to assess personal risk.
Worryingly, many are unaware of the frontline treatment, Paxlovid.
Biden's "test and treat" policy is a disaster so far, the US Congress's refusal to fund COVID measures means we'll run out this fall, barring invocation of the Defense Production Act.
But Covid cases could be undercounted by a factor of 30, an early survey of the surge in New York City indicates. “It would appear official case counts are under-estimating the true burden of infection by about 30-fold, which is a huge surprise,” said Denis Nash, an author of the study and a distinguished professor of epidemiology at the City University of New York School of Public Health.
About one in five – 22% – of adult New Yorkers likely had Covid between 23 April and 8 May, according to the preprint study, which has not been peer-reviewed or published. That would mean 1.5 million adults in the city had Covid in a single two-week period – far higher than official counts during that time.
While the study focused on New York, these findings may be true throughout the rest of the country, Nash said. In fact, New Yorkers likely have better access to testing than most of the country, which means undercounting could be even worse elsewhere.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/01/us-covid-surge-cases-rate

Suddenly, California officials are moving toward new indoor mask rules (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-06-02/l-a-county-coronavirus-positive-hospitalizations-rise-is-a-mask-order-coming) as coronavirus cases enter the danger zone in many parts of the state.
The virus has been spreading rapidly across California after a spring of big declines. That is setting up an anxious summer (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-05-21/another-bummer-coronavirus-summer-for-california-cases-rising-but-there-is-hope) in which officials are now talking about a return to mask wearing to prevent wider spread.

With a seven-day daily average of more than 10,200 cases on Friday, Florida is a state classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as having a “high level” of transmission. Broward and Miami-Dade counties are reporting a test positivity rate of more than 20%. Palm Beach County’s positivity rate is 18.9%. Health officials consider transmission levels under control when the rate is less than 5%.
Jason Salemi, an epidemiologist at the University of South Florida, points out, “We might actually (finally) be seeing some improvement in the Northeast, but in Florida — 3 in 4 people live in a high-risk county, based on the hospitalization-based measure.”

Strategic and economic dimension of infection, fitness for work.
Many individuals who contract Covid-19 end up returning to the workforce upon recovery. However, approximately one-third of the individuals who contract Covid-19 report experiencing persistent cognitive impairments2.To this end, the current research demonstrated that individuals who had contracted Covid-19 reported lower taskperformance and higher intentions to leave their jobs, relative to individuals who had not contracted Covid-19.Tese efects were mediated by cognitive failures at work.We suspect that because death is a relatively rare outcome among Covid-19 patients, many individuals believethey are likely to be largely unafected by Covid-19 if they are infected. However, our results indicate that contracting Covid-19 can have practical implications for individuals’ everyday lives; particularly, their ability tofunction efectively at work. As such, it is possible that beyond harming one’s physical health, Covid-19 alsoposes risks to financial well-being.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-13051-1.pdf

So much for superimmunity and catching COVID to prevent COVID.
Writing in the journal Science (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abq1841), the researchers reported how they followed the vaccination and infection experiences of 731 triple vaccinated healthcare workers in the UK from March 2020 to January 2022. The team then used blood samples collected from participants in the weeks after their third dose of vaccine to explore their antibody and T-cell responses towards the Omicron variant, BA.1.
The participants varied considerably in terms of their Covid history, including whether they had had a previous Covid infection and, if so, the variant involved.
The results suggested that, regardless of the participants’ previous infection history, a few weeks after their third Covid jab their levels of T-cells against Omicron proteins were poor, while levels of antibodies against Omicron proteins were lower than against other variants.
But previous infections also mattered. Among other findings the team reported infection with Omicron increased protection against future infection with other variants. However, it only offered a limited boost to protection against another Omicron infection – a response that was actually weakened among those who had also previously had the original strain of the virus.
The team said the results held for both antibody and T-cell responses, and suggested those who caught Covid in the first wave of the pandemic did not gain a boost to their immune response should they subsequently catch Omicron.

Getting COVID can impair immune response to subsequent infection.
In summary, these studies have shown that the high global prevalence of B.1.1.529 (Omicron) infections and reinfections likely reflects considerable subversion of immune recognition at both the B, T cell, antibody binding and nAb level, although with considerable differential modulation through immune imprinting. Some imprinted combinations, such as infection during the Wuhan Hu-1 and Omicron waves, confer particularly impaired responses.https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abq1841

Don't worry, brotendo, it's just a little brain damage
Researchers are finally making headway in understanding how the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus causes loss of smell. And a multitude of potential treatments to tackle the condition are undergoing clinical trials, including steroids and blood plasma.
Once a tell-tale sign of COVID-19, smell disruption is becoming less common as the virus evolves. “Our inboxes are not as flooded as they used to be,” says Valentina Parma, a psychologist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who helped field desperate inquiries from patients throughout the first two years of the pandemic.
https://media.nature.com/w400/magazine-assets/d41586-022-01589-z/d41586-022-01589-z_18924858.jpg
(https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00055-6)
A study published last month1 (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01589-z#ref-CR1) surveyed 616,318 people in the United States who have had COVID-19. It found that, compared with those who had been infected with the original virus, people who had contracted the Alpha variant — the first variant of concern to arise — were 50% as likely to have chemosensory disruption. This probability fell to 44% for the later Delta variant, and to 17% for the latest variant, Omicron.
But the news is not all good: a significant portion of people infected early in the pandemic still experience chemosensory effects. A 2021 study2 (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01589-z#ref-CR2) followed 100 people who had had mild cases of COVID-19 and 100 people who repeatedly tested negative. More than a year after their infections, 46% of those who had had COVID-19 still had smell problems; by contrast, just 10% of the control group had developed some smell loss, but for other reasons. Furthermore, 7% of those who had been infected still had total smell loss, or ‘anosmia’, at the end of the year. Given that more than 500 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide, tens of millions of people probably have lingering smell problems.
For these people, help can’t come soon enough. Simple activities such as tasting food or smelling flowers are now “really emotionally distressing”, Parma says.
Scrambled nuclei
A clearer picture of how SARS-CoV-2 causes this disruption should help to create better therapies for the condition. Early in the pandemic, a study showed3 (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01589-z#ref-CR3) that the virus attacks cells in the nose, called sustentacular cells, that provide nutrients and support to odour-sensing neurons.
Since then, clues have emerged about what happens to the olfactory neurons after infection. Researchers including biochemist Stavros Lomvardas at Columbia University in New York City examined people who had died from COVID-19 and found that, although their neurons were intact, they had fewer membrane-embedded receptors for detecting odour molecules than usual4 (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01589-z#ref-CR4).
https://media.nature.com/w400/magazine-assets/d41586-022-01589-z/d41586-022-01589-z_19351672.jpg
(https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01693-6)
This was because the neurons’ nuclei had been scrambled. Normally, the chromosomes in these nuclei are organized into two compartments — a structure that enables the neurons to express specific odour receptors at high levels. But when the team looked at the autopsied neurons, “the nuclear architecture was unrecognizable,” Lomvardas says.
There is also evidence of lasting changes to the brain for people with smell loss. In a study published in March6 (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01589-z#ref-CR6), 785 people in the United Kingdom had their brains scanned twice. About 400 people became infected with COVID-19 between scans, so the scientists were able to observe structural changes. The COVID-19 survivors showed multiple changes, including markers of tissue damage in areas linked to the brain’s olfactory centre. It’s not clear why this was the case, but one possibility is lack of input. “When we cut off input from the nose, the brain atrophies,” says Danielle Reed, a geneticist also at Monell. “It’s one of the clearest things we know about taste and smell.”https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01589-z

The fact that we would still need clarification on what "right" means in the context of your sentence goes to show the level of corrosive bullshit he peddled. Times of crisis generally brings people together, if nothing for survival. This was the exact opposite.

Three cruise lines have responded by bringing back indoor mask mandates.

“In an abundance of caution, masks are required at all indoor locations on northbound and southbound Alaska voyages between Whittier and Vancouver until further notice,” the line said in a statement it shared with TMR.
Princess has seen several spikes of COVID-19 cases onboard its Alaska ships over the past month. All six ships sailing in Alaska for Princess are in the CDC’s Orange designation, meaning the “CDC has started an investigation and the ship remains under observation.”
Holland America
Holland America sent a similar message to passengers booked on its open-jaw cruises between Vancouver and Whittier.
“Out of an abundance of caution due to the rise in positive COVID-19 cases throughout Alaska, all guests will be required to wear face masks at all times while onboard, except when eating or drinking or in their own staterooms.”
Of six Holland America ships deployed in Alaska, four are in the CDC’s Orange designation; one is Yellow (reported cases of COVID-19 are below the threshold for CDC investigation); and one is Green (no reported cases of COVID-19).
Lindblad Expeditions
Lindblad, which operates several small ships in Alaskan waters, had dropped its mask requirements in April at the start of the cruise season. As of May 18, the line reinstated its face covering requirement for indoor spaces, “due to an increase in COVID-19 cases globally.”

Anecdotal stuff:
Epidemiologist friend attending a cancer conference in Dallas with a bunch of medical doctors was a mess as a significant number of doctors who see patients came down with symptoms and PCR test +
Friend in Austin playing indoor soccer got it most likely on the bench close to other people breathing rapidly. Its now spread through the entire league.
None of these people are getting ill enough to go to the hospital, but because jobs require clean bill of health along with relatives and people you dont want to give it to... big hassle if you get in and actually work closely with other people. Also having to stay away from friends and relatives and no travel. "Pain in the neck" (and respiratory system)
Also reinfection of older folks appears to happen more frequently. This virus, whatever types are being spread now, appear not nearly as dangerous in younger folks as expected, the older folks also appear to get sicker but not being hospitalized and an overwhelming rate.
Welcome to the summer escape from the heat and being indoors.
And I am most happy to say this is a record tenure for me not getting sick at all. "Masks dont work" pure BS. Think I am going to get a second booster and possibly mask up while attending an Austin FC game in Austin this weekend. Hot as hell so we will have to see. Thoughts and prayers for a windy game.

No...I know. Wasn't implying that.
In Trump's defense, in an election year, this was a death blow (combined with the asinine behavior and tweets). I'm not sure any president, Rep or Dem, would have gotten it right. Which probably would have meant shutting down the economy. Which in hindsight, might not have made much of a difference.
He would have been fine if he even pretended to give a shit.

Saharan dust was doing that to me all last week. That shit bothers me more than any pollen which is weird because they always say it's not an allergen.
They say ba.5 is infecting the lower lungs more than the upper airways, unlike the earlier omicron. If true there will be a lot less confusing it with allergies once it takes over.

Reinfection increases the risk to patients.
Compared to non-infected controls, assessment of the cumulative risks of repeated infection showed that the risk and burden increased in a graded fashion according to the number of infections. The constellation of findings show that reinfection adds non-trivial risks of all-cause mortality, hospitalization, and adverse health outcomes in the acute and post-acute phase of the reinfection. Reducing overall burden of death and disease due to SARS-CoV-2 will require strategies for reinfection prevention.https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-1749502/v1

I kind of wonder if increased sensitivity to allergens might turn out a long COVID effect. I got my ass kicked the smog from the Mexican farmers burning their fields last month which has never bothered me too much, though maybe that's also attributable to having August level heat instead of rain in May. When the Saharan dust was extremely high for a few days two or three years ago it bothered me, but this year I think it's a lot less and it has my sinuses and throat going crazy worse than then. Just seems like I have gotten quite a bit more sensitive to allergens this year after catching omicron in January.

Whistling past the graveyard
An expectation exists, both in the lay public and in the scientific community, that future waves of the virus will exhibit decreased [infection fatality rate (IFR)], either due to viral attenuation or the progressive buildup of immunity. In this work, we examine the basis for that expectation, assessing the impact of virulence on transmission. Our findings suggest that large increases in virulence for SARS-CoV-2 would result in minimal loss of transmission, implying that the IFR may be free to increase or decrease under neutral evolutionary drift. We further examine the effect of changes in the IFR on the steady-state death toll under conditions of endemic COVID-19. Our modeling suggests that endemic SARS-CoV-2 implies vast transmission resulting in yearly US COVID-19 death tolls numbering in the hundreds of thousands under many plausible scenarios, with even modest increases in the IFR leading to an unsustainable mortality burden. Our findings thus highlight the critical importance of enacting a concerted strategy (involving for example global access to vaccines, therapeutics, prophylactics and nonpharmaceutical interventions) to suppress SARS-CoV-2 transmission, thereby reducing the risk of catastrophic outcomeshttps://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.03.29.22273146v1.article-metrics

I'd always heard the PCR was uncomfortable but this wasn't the case for me. Felt just like the quick test. Got a PCR test a week later and it was a swab shoved up to my brain. Came back positive. My guess is that many of the people doing PCR tests are not adequately testing.

...because they don't want that (positive) result. They'd rather whistle past the graveyard and remain untouched.
It's human. We've all been there & done that.

Nah PCR is quite uncomfortable if you're doing it right. I jam that fucking swab all the way up my nostril and then do circles counting to 30 in Japanese before going to the next nostril. Though it's not as bad as the initial PCR swab which literally used like a foot long swab. I think I just got a cold that turned out kind of ugly since I hadn't had one in like 3 years thanks to masking and distancing during the worst of the pandemic.

I don't know about that. I don't think they were trained properly. Why would a doctor's office want to not find something wrong with you?

I misunderstood. I thought it was the patient applying the COVID test to themselves and cheating it so as to get a normal response.

no reporting, no problem
New York City suddenly removed its color-coded coronavirus alert system this week (https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-main.page) just as newer Omicron subvariants (https://www.nytimes.com/article/omicron-coronavirus-variant.html) are fueling another rise in cases and hospitalizations.
Mayor Eric Adams and health officials quietly took down the city’s high profile alert system (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/20/nyregion/new-york-covid-alert-risk.html) that warned New Yorkers when they were at a greater risk of catching the virus and should consider taking more precautions.[/COLOR]
Now the city’s website reads: “We are re-evaluating the city’s Covid Alert system. Check back here for updates in the coming weeks.”

Testing has been deemphasized, wastewater assays give us a truer picture of local conditions.
Regional wastewater paints a stark picture of a pandemic that is far from over. While the state’s testing program shows coronavirus case rates to be dropping across much of Northern California, wastewater analysis indicates that in many places, viral spread this month rivals or even exceeds the original omicron surge that swept through the country in January, creating record infections.

Not mentioned: catching COVID correlates strongly with increased all-cause mortality and reinfection raises the risk progressively.
Also not mentioned, COVID-related T-cell depletion.
Rather than a wall of immunity arising from vaccinations and previous infections, we are seeing wave after wave of new cases and a rapidly growing burden of long-term disease. What’s going on? The latest scientific research has some answers.
During May and June two new variants, BA.4 and BA.5, progressively displaced the previous Omicron subvariant, BA.2. They are even more transmissible and more immune-evasive. Last week a group of collaborators, including me and a professor of immunology and respiratory medicine, Rosemary Boyton, published (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abq1841) a paper in Science, looking comprehensively at immunity to the Omicron family, both in triple-vaccinated people and also in those who then suffered breakthrough infections during the Omicron wave. This lets us examine whether Omicron was, as some hoped, a benign natural booster of our Covid immunity. It turns out that isn’t the case.
We considered many facets of immunity, including the antibodies most implicated in protection (“neutralising antibodies”), as well as protective “immune memory” in white blood cells. The results tell us it is unsurprising that breakthrough infections were so common. Most people – even when triple-vaccinated – had 20 times less neutralising antibody response against Omicron than against the initial “Wuhan” strain. Importantly, Omicron infection was a poor booster of immunity to further Omicron infections. It is a kind of stealth virus that gets in under the radar without doing too much to alert immune defences. Even having had Omicron, we’re not well protected from further infections.
Also, to be added to the now complex mix is “immune imprinting”. This is the finding that our immune response to Covid is shaped very differently, depending on our prior exposures – infection in one wave relative to another, plus vaccination. In our study, those who’d been infected in the first wave and then again with Omicron had particularly poor T-cell responses and no boosting of antibodies. That is, some combinations of exposures may leave us poorly protected relative to others.
Contrary to the myth that we are sliding into a comfortable evolutionary relationship with a common-cold-like, friendly virus, this is more like being trapped on a rollercoaster in a horror film. There’s nothing cold-like or friendly about a large part of the workforce needing significant absences from work, feeling awful and sometimes getting reinfected over and over again, just weeks apart. And that’s before the risk of long Covid.

Wow, it's almost like we couldn't escape the same pattern viruses have had for millennia, it's going to be the same thing till the virus reaches it's level where it just can't be anymore efficient than it already is

Gee, wrecky, 3 years ago come January that's precisely what the nation's best experts told President Trump in the Oval office..."Americans will die, Mr. President. (Trump: 'oh, fuck me.') Nothing will touch it. It will have to be herded out like 100 years ago, sir."
Within 24 hours those self same experts told President Obama the exact same-damn-thing.
Within 2 years later those self same experts told Biden the same-damn-thing.
What'd Biden do? "I'll shut it down."
No, you won't.
