Subway seems a bit sketchy to me. All those plastic containers with meat, veg, that get opened constantly. I'm a hard pass on Subway.:lol what do you think happens in other restaurants? I can only hope they're masking up in addition to all the other stuff.

Most have already closed.
The ones that remain open are the tiny ones who cant afford to close. Closing means going out of business forever for them.
I'm being a lazy fuck and ordering pizza. Done so the last 3 nights. The delivery guy is decked out in gloves and mask. Fucking weird to see. :lol

If you're offering, I'd like to read a couple of the transmissibility links you're looking at. Thanks
Keep in mind this is working off the Wuhan data:
Calculations of the virus’s basic reproduction number, or R0 — the number of people on average one infected person will pass the virus to — suggest a range of 2–2.5.
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00758-2
I would expect the R0 to be a bit lower in less densely populated areas.
Seasonal strains of flu can be anywhere from 0.9 to 2.0, and in this case we get a more accurate picture since we have a history of data to work with.
R0 values estimated for seasonal strains of influenza (mean R0 1.3: range 0.9 to 2.1).
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19545404
Dr. Paul Auwaeter believes:
“If you have a COVID-19 patient in your household, your risk of developing the infection is about 10%….If you were casually exposed to the virus in the workplace (e.g., you were not locked up in conference room for six hours with someone who was infected [like a hospital]), your chance of infection is about 0.5%”

Feel free to provide more links I don't doubt you have sources.
Would you characterize the epidemiology as broadly in agreement or settled on the questions of mortality and transmissibility?
If not, can you provide any examples contrary to your argument?
No. So you have to weigh all the information and come to your own conclusions. That's all we can do. I lean more toward the "optimistic" side, at least relative to the 60 million/3 million dead scenarios. I also believe we won't become the next Italy in terms of mortality rate.

Viruses that live in lungs? I doubt it. If soap can kill the lipids layer shell, then the acid is probably not very hospitable. the attachment points are for lung cells, I doubt stomach cells have similar enough molecular physiology. Dunno, though. Interesting question.

Remember, just working off Wuhan. We won't know the truth mortality rate for awhile. Germany is running under 1 percent, because they have the greatest ratio of mild cases tested to severe cases tested.
Crucially, Germany started testing people even with milder symptoms relatively early on, meaning the total number of confirmed cases may give a more accurate picture of the virus’s spread than in other states.

honestly, havent had takeout in a couple of weeks now. we're at a point where we just want as few people as possible being in contact with the food we eat. certainly, at various points in the process of food getting onto the shelves, people will get in contact with it, and that's a given. doesn't mean we can't minimize it.
even when getting produce, i'm always looking for packaged goods (bagged potatoes/onions/apples instead of hand picking them, etc). and i've been buying packaged/frozen meats instead of getting them from the counter. just until this thing blows over
ironically our favorite takeout place near us is a chinese place :lol... extra stigma

How the Pandemic Will End
The U.S. may end up with the worst COVID-19 outbreak in the industrialized world.
This is how it’s going to play out.
More transmissible and fatal than seasonal influenza,
the new coronavirus is also stealthier (https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/03/biography-new-coronavirus/608338/),
spreading from one host to another for several days before triggering obvious symptoms.
To contain such a pathogen,
nations must develop a test and use it
to identify infected people,
isolate them, and
trace those they’ve had contact with.
That is what South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong did to tremendous effect.
It is what the United States did not.
That a biomedical powerhouse like the U.S. should so thoroughly fail to create a very simple diagnostic test was, quite literally, unimaginable.
“I’m not aware of any simulations that I or others have run where we [considered] a failure of testing,”
The testing fiasco was the original sin of America’s pandemic failure, the single flaw that undermined every other countermeasure.
the White House is a ghost town (https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2017/03/trump-budget-cuts-science/519825/) of scientific expertise.
A pandemic-preparedness office that was part of the National Security Council was dissolved in 2018 (https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/05/white-house-loses-global-health-security-lead-as-a-new-ebola-outbreak-hits/560195/).
On January 28, Luciana Borio, who was part of that team,
urged the government (https://www.wsj.com/articles/act-now-to-prevent-an-american-epidemic-11580255335) to “act now to prevent an American epidemic,” and
specifically to work with the private sector to develop fast, easy diagnostic tests.
But with the office shuttered, those warnings were published in The Wall Street Journal, rather than spoken into the president’s ear.
Instead of springing into action, America sat idle.
Rudderless, blindsided, lethargic, and uncoordinated,
America has mishandled the COVID-19 crisis to a substantially worse degree than what every health expert I’ve spoken with had feared.
“The U.S. may end up with the worst outbreak in the industrialized world.”
COVID-19 is a slow and long illness.
As of last weekend, the nation had 17,000 confirmed cases, but the actual number was probably somewhere between 60,000 and 245,000 (https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/03/how-many-americans-are-sick-lost-february/608521/).
Even a perfect response won’t end the pandemic.
As long as the virus persists somewhere, there’s a chance that
one infected traveler will reignite fresh sparks in countries that have already extinguished their fires.
This is already happening in China, Singapore, and other Asian countries that briefly seemed to have the virus under control.
the odds of worldwide synchronous control seem vanishingly small.
the virus does what past flu pandemics have done: It burns through the world and leaves behind enough immune survivors that it eventually struggles to find viable hosts.
come at a terrible cost (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/all-side-effects-few-benefits/608599/): SARS-CoV-2 is more transmissible and fatal than the flu, and it would likely leave behind many millions of corpses and a trail of devastated health systems.
third scenario is that the world plays a protracted game of whack-a-mole with the virus,
there are no existing vaccines for coronaviruses—until now, these viruses seemed to cause diseases that were mild or rare—so researchers must start from scratch.
No matter which strategy is faster, Berkley and others estimate that it will take 12 to 18 months to develop a proven vaccine, and
then longer still to make it, ship it, and inject it into people’s arms.
duration of immunity. When people are infected by the milder human coronaviruses that cause cold-like symptoms, they remain immune for less than a year.
The cost of reaching that point, with as few deaths as possible, will be enormous.
, a secondary pandemic of mental-health problems will follow. At a moment of profound dread and uncertainty, people are being cut off from soothing human contact.
Elderly people, who are already excluded from much of public life, are being asked to distance themselves even further, deepening their loneliness.
One to two years after SARS hit Toronto, people who dealt with the outbreak (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17326946) were still less productive and more likely to be experiencing burnout and post-traumatic stress.

The good news: coronavirus is not foodborne. That means you can't get the coronavirus by ingesting food. You can get it from people, of course, those who sneeze, cough or exhale the coronavirus. Which is why we're told not to touch others, nor stay too close to others, and to wash our hands often.
But still, do you need to worry about how you handle food? What if someone sneezed on your apple? Can you still eat your steak rare? What about sushi – is it safe to eat?
We asked two food scientists at Rutgers University – graduate program director Donald Schaffner and professor emeritus Thomas Montville – on how tobest handle food to protect us against the coronavirus.
Question:Experts say the coronavirus is not foodborne. Yet, they strongly suspect animals in China – in a food market, no less – were the likely source of the initial infection. So doesn't that mean that it is foodborne?
Donald Schaffner: It's thought that the virus was transmitted by animals not by eating them but by having close proximity to the animals. Viruses can jump between species and that's what most probably happened. Most probably it was a respiratory transmission.
How to care for your dry, raw handsafter washing them to prevent coronavirus (https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/2020/03/13/coronavirus-concern-how-care-hands-after-washing-and-sanitizing-them-so-much/5038941002/)

Question: Do I need to wash fruits and vegetables for a longer time due to the coronavirus? Do I need to “sanitize” them with soap?
Thomas Montville: Wash your fruits and vegetables as usual, or even with a little warm soapy water. We should always wash our fruits and vegetables. That's just good safety practice.
Question:What about meat? While the virus is not foodborne, what if the butcher has coronavirus and touched the meat? Can I now get the virus?
Montville: Cooking would kill the virus.
Schaffner:Scientists will never say anything is at zero risk, but I'm not worried at all about getting the coronavirus from food. Hypothetically, yes, perhaps your piece of meat could have the virus on it. But your stomach acids will kill it. Plus the coronavirus is not equipped to get through your intestine's walls, which is how foodborne diseases make you sick.
Question:What about raw foods, like sushi or steak tartare?
Montville: You will never find a food scientist who eats tartare. It can be contaminated with pathogenic bacteria – E. coli, salmonella, listeria. In fact, it's a risk to eat a hamburger rare. As far as sushi, I just don't eat it.
Question: What about all the paper bags food comes in? Do I need to worry about them?
Montville: There's no scientific data that's related to that. It's believed that the virus can survive on cardboard for 24 hours; steel or wood for maybe three days. The mantra in food science is: Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands. And cook your food.

“Is there sufficient personal protective equipment for healthcare workers who are providing medical care?” the playbook instructs its readers, as one early decision that officials should address when facing a potential pandemic. “If YES: What are the triggers to signal exhaustion of supplies? Are additional supplies available? If NO: Should the Strategic National Stockpile release PPE to states?”

Eyup. When one does an organizational analysis for risks, and risk mitigation strategies, i.e. leadership, you look for the "tone at the top" and how that gets promulgated.
Trumps early downplaying of this set the tone for all the general lackadaisical stuff that followed after it. Fox followed suit for a week or two and that was enough for it to sink into the collective cult. Even when he reversed message, the damage had already been done.
It is kind of shocking to watch. His instinct to make himself seem better at his job than he actually is, i.e. image over substance, is literally going to kill people.

Man, I'm lucky to get any produce at HEB. I normally get something like that for a lazy weeknight. Now, I wish they did have those. That said, my strategy at the store has almost been the opposite of that. Rather than avoiding food people touched, I take anything I touch. They literally had a playbook called "The Playbook."
Jesus.
Eyup. This whole fucking thing is a text-book case of mismanagement. Inconsistent messaging, unscientific advice, failure to practice plans, etc. The campaign ads are already writing themselves.

You'll dismiss what I say, but your Atlantic article was a pop sci piece and was referencing sources that are two weeks old with conclusions based off the Wuhan situation. No one really knows the "true" R0 of Covid-19.
Dr. Paul Auwaerter @ Johns Hopkins on COVID-19 -
“More closed environments may have a higher R naught than the general numbers reported. Sometimes this is due to a superspreader, most though probably due to crowding and vulnerability (e.g., elderly)”
A city like Wuhan with a dense population is a lot more "closed" than less dense population cities, meaning the R0 is going to naturally be higher in such an environment. From the WHO report:
When a cluster of several infected people occurred in China, it was most often (78-85%) caused by an infection within the family by droplets and other carriers of infection in close contact with an infected person. Transmission by fine aerosols in the air over long distances is not one of the main causes of spread. Most of the 2,055 infected hospital workers were either infected at home or in the early phase of the outbreak in Wuhan when hospital safeguards were not raised yet.
https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf
The Wuhan data no doubt skews the R0 factor higher. Transmissibility won't be the same in San Antonio.
About it being "stealthier." From the CDC's own mouth:
People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
The virus being "stealthy" is overstated and/or inconclusive.

Posting some more positive expert opinion (from the professor of medicine and professor of epidemiology and population health, as well as professor by courtesy of biomedical data science at Stanford University School of Medicine, professor by courtesy of statistics at Stanford University School of Humanities and Sciences, and co-director of the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) at Stanford University). Pretty good resume, I think.
The data collected so far on how many people are infected and how the epidemic is evolving are utterly unreliable. Given the limited testing to date, some deaths and probably the vast majority of infections due to SARS-CoV-2 are being missed. We don’t know if we are failing to capture infections by a factor of three or 300. Three months after the outbreak emerged, most countries, including the U.S., lack the ability to test a large number of people and no countries have reliable data on the prevalence of the virus in a representative random sample of the general population.
Translation: Don't pay attention to the mortality rates. And the bright side here is that they are probably much lower than recorded.
He talks about the Diamond Princess Cruise situation and extrapolates a bit:
The one situation where an entire, closed population was tested was the Diamond Princess cruise ship and its quarantine passengers. The case fatality rate there was 1.0%, but this was a largely elderly population, in which the death rate from Covid-19 is much higher.
Projecting the Diamond Princess mortality rate onto the age structure of the U.S. population, the death rate among people infected with Covid-19 would be 0.125%. But since this estimate is based on extremely thin data — there were just seven deaths among the 700 infected passengers and crew — the real death rate could stretch from five times lower (0.025%) to five times higher (0.625%).
We can crosscheck here with Germany's numbers who is thought to have the best mix of mild and severe test samples. Their mortality rate: .067.
Some food for thought:
However, even some so-called mild or common-cold-type coronaviruses that have been known for decades can have case fatality rates as high as 8% when they infect elderly people in nursing homes. In fact, such “mild” coronaviruses infect tens of millions of people every year, and account for 3% to 11% of those hospitalized in the U.S. with lower respiratory infections each winter.
In the U.S., for example, so far this season 1,073,976 specimens have been tested and 222,552 (20.7%) have tested positive for influenza.
That was the positive rate for the Diamond Princess Cruise sample. So we can maybe conclude here that Corvid is around flu transmissibility levels.
More food for thought:
In an autopsy series that tested for respiratory viruses in specimens from 57 elderly persons who died during the 2016 to 2017 influenza season, influenza viruses were detected in 18% of the specimens, while any kind of respiratory virus was found in 47%. In some people who die from viral respiratory pathogens, more than one virus is found upon autopsy and bacteria are often superimposed.
A positive test for coronavirus does not mean necessarily that this virus is always primarily responsible for a patient’s demise.
Says you can't project much based on the data we have:
Some worry that the 68 deaths from Covid-19 in the U.S. as of March 16 will increase exponentially to 680, 6,800, 68,000, 680,000 … along with similar catastrophic patterns around the globe. Is that a realistic scenario, or bad science fiction? How can we tell at what point such a curve might stop?
The most valuable piece of information for answering those questions would be to know the current prevalence of the infection in a random sample of a population and to repeat this exercise at regular time intervals to estimate the incidence of new infections. Sadly, that’s information we don’t have.
I share this conclusion, as you all know:
In the most pessimistic scenario, which I do not espouse, if the new coronavirus infects 60% of the global population and 1% of the infected people die, that will translate into more than 40 million deaths globally,

I think if I had to, I have at least a month's worth of stuff jammed in the pantry, cupboards and freezer. I know it might sound awkward, but thinking just in terms solely of virus death rate simply does not capture the whole picture. In a vacuum, sure, the virus infects X, Y die because of it, and you do the math: Y / X * 100.
But there's all sorts of other secondary issues which also pile up and complicate the situation even more, and lead to more fatalities: infected health personnel causes diminished response time, overloaded hospitals means other emergency situations might not get the urgency care they need and lead to more deaths.
You might plan to have a 10%-15% (to throw a number) capacity cushion in normal circumstances, but this thing is going to force you to cope with a 50%-60% sudden increase, and you can rush to try to meet that demand as much as you'd like, but odds are you won't be able to in the span you need to.
That's what the entire social distancing is all about, trying to bring down that sudden spike and smooth it out as much as possible.
As much as we'd like to focus on death rate, infection rate is also extremely important here, and unfortunately this thing is a bitch when it comes to that.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying. Brings home the question I asked a week ago. Would you rather get this early or late. I'd rather have it early and get it over with. I may have already had it, but no antibody test is available.
From a scientific standpoint, anti-body tests will tell you who has been infected and eventually let you do some stats, and hopefully help for the next time.
But the idea of early testing when this didn't hit the fan yet was so we could gauge which areas looked like they were going to need more help, and we could plan accordingly, shift resources, etc. It's too late for that now, and it was a lost opportunity. Now, we're just going to find out the worst way possible, as deaths pile up.
At this point, the real silver bullet here would be to find a treatment that can be self-administered with a relatively good prognosis. Something that minimizes hospital stays for the less severe cases. I rather not get it until a vaccine is available, any other time is just always risky. But if I get, we can't avoid dealing with it.

Late. Then you'll have the possibility of getting a treatment they've yet to discover. At the very least you might get treated with the plasma from those that recovered which can also be an effective treatment.

Exactly. Philadelphia went to the "beaches" - (that parade) & got murdered.
St. Louis didn't & was fine.
Present day:::
Louisiana partied their asses off at Mardi Gra & now the chickens have come home to roost.
California & Florida are hitting the beaches & getting murdered.
NYC is hitting Central Park for b-ball & Frisbee & getting murdered.

“Will we have hundreds of thousands of deaths, or tens of thousands of deaths? That’s what keeps us up,” he told Business Insider. “These are people who all know, who each one of us will know. It’ll be our friends, it’ll be our family, it’ll be people whom we love dearly.”
He said the stay-at-home orders in L.A. won’t be lifted by Easter, as President Donald Trump has said, but will last at least two months ― and he warned against false optimism.
“Giving people false hope will crush their spirits and will kill more people,” the mayor said. “Will crush their spirits, will revert their actions, and will kill more people.”

That whole thing was another superspreading event, even if canceled. Florida has done to date 27,000 tests total, while New York is doing tens of thousands per DAY.
It is certainly spreading undetected in Florida as a result, with some other data indicating this. This, just like Louisiana's spike due to Mardi Gras, does not bode well.
In less two weeks time, we will see Florida's unique older retiree demographic dying in large numbers, sadly. Those kids came together, spread it around, and then traveled back home, passing through gas stations, restaurants, airports, and stores along the way.

even when getting produce, i'm always looking for packaged goods (bagged potatoes/onions/apples instead of hand picking them, etc). and i've been buying packaged/frozen meats instead of getting them from the counter. just until this thing blows over

its obvious china did that that does not mean the measures they took in wuhan made great strides to stop the pandemic
- closing up regions was key
- also quarantining asymptomatic people in containment locations (not sending them home like us)

:lol that default tough guy accusation when someone doesn't kowtow to your panic
My panic.
There are people still working with their kids sitting at home supposedly doing school work via... what, a phone?
There are people experiencing symptoms after being cleared and some cleared feel find and still are still told dont go to work.
Total lack of cooridnation causing a total mess.
But you will solve it because you got your coffee.
Hey since you are doing so well, why dont you just give the order for everyone to get back to work and school.
Or at least dream about it.
Projecting hand wringing when people just want normalcy.
You are so cool and collected. Dream you have the authority give orders.

The Second Virus Shockwave Is Hitting China’s Factories Already
“It is definitely the second shock-wave for the Chinese economy,”
said Xing Zhaopeng, an economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group.
The global spread of the virus
“will affect China manufacturing through two channels:
disrupted supply chains and
declining external demand.”

Really silly comparisons.
The federal government doesn't provide either of those. Do you expect your local city council to be in charge of healthcare?
They are all public goods. Economics fail.

Every other industrialized country has national health insurance. Every one. None have gone broke from it, they can all afford it, and their costs about half of what our does per capita.

I tell my kids that people are the way they are for a reason.
Abuse tends to produce sociopaths. Sound familiar? As annoyed or angry as I ever get with DMC, there is always a little pity for the kid he used to be. Can you imagine what kind of stunted upbringing would extinguish empathy that completely? ish.

Our other built in advantages like much, much less population density than a New York, not much use of mass transit, and sunlight all year around (I think the "warm weather" theory might have to do more with a region's particular UV profile than just raw temperature. It's a fact of nature these viruses don't withstand UV light) are playing big roles, as well. But yes, credit our response, although we were a bit late in SoCal. I just hope there isn't an impending "Mardi Gras" spike like they're seeing in New Orleans. The casino factor still worries me, as they were all running up until mid-March.
We seem to be dodging bullets. Texas, as well. And Florida looks good. Hope they don't have a Spring Break factor or something.

Makes perfect sense. If you go over there on your own you have to stand in line. If you get ambulanced over, they either take you inside to the end of the line, or, they drop you off at the beginning of the line.

not really. if you're uninsured, ambulance rides can be pricey. and even if you are insured, if they are only covered if deemed medically necessary, and you're still dealing with deductibles, etc. and that's only for policies that DO specifically cover ambulance services. many health plans don't touch them at all

Alabama governor won’t issue shelter-in-place order because ’we are not California.’ By population, it’s worse.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/03/27/alabama-governor-wont-order-shelter-in-place-because-we-are-not-california-by-population-its-worse/
Trump Death Cult finally met a crisis they can't lie their way out of.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Y’all, we are not Louisiana, we are not New York State, we are not California,” she said on Thursday, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. “Right now is not the time to order people to shelter in place.”
In terms of raw case totals, that’s true. Data from Johns Hopkins University compiled through Thursday show that Alabama’s case total is in the hundreds, compared to thousands of cases in Louisiana and California and tens of thousands in New York.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=https://arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/MFEQLELM6FC75GUTH7X4RSKPDE.png&w=1440
But, again, the concern that shelter-in-place orders are meant to address is the spread of the virus. And on that metric, things in Alabama don’t compare quite as well.
On the graph below, lines that increase more rapidly (have a steeper slope) have seen faster spreads since the 10th recorded case in that state. It’s hard to tell, but Alabama’s line is rising faster than California’s.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=https://arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/RS57BFWN6FGXHDFRHFBGYZS34Q.png&w=1440

“He didn’t have insurance, so they did not treat him,”
The staff at the urgent care facility told the teen to

“En route to AV Hospital, he went into cardiac arrest,
when he got to AV hospital they were able to revive him and
keep him alive for about six hours,”
